CDH and Mandela Institute’s Groundbreaking Course Prepares Leaders for the Future of Law

On October 23, Cliffe Dekker Hofmeyr (CDH), in collaboration with the Mandela Institute and the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits), launched an inspiring initiative aimed at shaping the future of legal leadership: the Leading Legal Professionals and Practice course. Held at Wits’ Chalsty Centre from October 23 to 27, this course marks a pioneering step in bridging academia and the legal industry to foster the next generation of forward-thinking legal professionals.

In their keynote addresses, CDH CEO Brent Williams and Prof. Firoz Cachalia spoke passionately about the vision behind this collaboration. Brent emphasized the importance of bridging industry and academic gaps to offer relevant, hands-on training that prepares lawyers for the fast-evolving demands of today’s legal landscape. He highlighted that this partnership, years in the making, reflects a shared commitment to empowering legal professionals with skills that transcend traditional training—skills essential in today’s high-stakes, complex legal environments.

This unique course incorporated case studies, simulations, group activities, and self-assessment exercises to ensure a practical, hands-on approach to learning. Attendees were equipped with critical insights into strategic leadership, team-building, and agile decision-making—vital competencies for success in an increasingly dynamic legal world.

Participants were quick to commend the course for its depth and impact:

  • “An exceptional course that should receive formal endorsement from the Legal Practice Council and Department of Higher Education.”
  • “The professors’ expertise and delivery were outstanding. It’s essential for anyone in or aspiring to a leadership role.”
  • “Every session was thoughtfully structured, practical, and engaging.”
  • “The Tai Chi sessions added a refreshing touch to an already exceptional program!”

Through initiatives like the Leading Legal Professionals and Practice course, CDH, the Mandela Institute, and Wits are setting a new standard in legal education. Their collaboration ensures that future legal professionals are equipped not only with technical knowledge but also with the leadership acumen needed to thrive in the ever-evolving world of law.
