130 Years of SAB: A Legacy of Innovation, Impact, and Commitment to South Africa

For over a century, South African Breweries (SAB) has been integral to South Africa’s economic framework, driving industrial growth, fostering social development, and advancing brewing technology. As SAB marks its 130th anniversary, the company presents a campaign structured around four key pillars: Economic Impact, Social Impact, Innovation, and People.

Economic Contribution

SAB has played a central role in employment creation, capital investment, and market expansion. The beer industry underpins 1 in every 66 jobs in South Africa, underscoring its economic significance. Through local sourcing and production, SAB sustains agricultural networks, facilitates entrepreneurship, and strengthens industrial supply chains, ensuring that its influence extends throughout the economy.

Commitment to Social Development

SAB integrates corporate responsibility into its operational strategy. Over the last 15 years, the SAB Foundation has empowered thousands of entrepreneurs through targeted funding and mentorship programs. Concurrently, initiatives such as SAB Sharp have promoted responsible alcohol consumption, emphasizing the intersection of commercial success and social accountability.

Innovation in Brewing

Technological advancement and consumer-oriented research have shaped SAB’s market leadership. From introducing the first flavored beer to developing Africa’s first non-alcoholic beer, Castle Free, SAB has remained at the forefront of product innovation. Its commitment to evolving consumer preferences ensures its continued relevance in an increasingly complex industry.

The Workforce Driving SAB’s Success

SAB’s longevity is attributed to the expertise and dedication of its workforce. Across all operational levels, its employees have played a decisive role in sustaining the company’s trajectory. Their contributions form the foundation of SAB’s institutional knowledge and strategic adaptability.

Leadership and Strategic Vision

Guiding SAB’s Corporate Affairs is Zoleka Lisa, an experienced strategist and policy expert. Since assuming the role of Vice President in 2019, Lisa has shaped SAB’s regulatory engagement, stakeholder relations, and corporate reputation across South Africa, Lesotho, Eswatini, and Namibia. Her professional background, spanning over a decade at SAB and previous leadership at Accenture, reinforces her ability to navigate complex policy environments.

Lisa’s academic credentials include a BSc in Environmental Science and Economics from the University of Cape Town, an Honours degree from the University of the Witwatersrand, and executive training from institutions such as StanfordLSE, and Wits Business School. Her leadership extends to governance roles within the SAB Foundation and the Beer Association of South Africa (BASA), alongside prior board memberships at the global AB InBev Foundation and Business Unity South Africa (BUSA). She continues to drive initiatives centered on economic inclusion, corporate transformation, and sustainability.

A Defining Moment for SAB

SAB’s 130-year milestone is a strategic inflection point, marking both historical achievements and future ambitions. The company remains committed to expanding its economic impact, strengthening social initiatives, and maintaining its role as an industry leader in innovation and sustainability. With a clear vision and an adaptive approach, SAB looks ahead to new opportunities that will define the next era of its legacy.
