The Sanlam Cape Town Marathon is poised to be the first Abbott World Marathon Majors Candidate Race on the African continent. It’s an invitation for runners from all walks of life to push their limits and carve their names into the global running scene. This year, the marathon has attracted participants who embody the spirit of perseverance and determination, turning personal milestones into shared triumphs.
Sheldon Tatchell: A Journey of Transformation
Today, we recognize Sheldon Tatchell as an exemplary figure in the realm of goal achievement and determination. Recently completing the Cape Town Marathon, Sheldon marked a significant achievement—his inaugural full marathon. His transformative journey started one year ago with a dedicated commitment to enhance his life through running. Progressing from 5km and 10km events to successfully finishing half-marathons, Sheldon has demonstrated remarkable accomplishments in a brief period.
“I’m proud to say I not only reached my goal weight but also achieved the incredible feat of completing a full marathon!” he exclaimed, capturing the essence of his experience.
A Shared Celebration of Community and Culture
Both Sheldon and Melvyn’s stories exemplify the essence of the Sanlam Cape Town Marathon initiative. It is more than a race; it is a celebration of personal achievements, community support, and the rich cultural diversity of Africa. As these two gentlemen take their places on the global stage, they embody the spirit of resilience and camaraderie that defines not only the marathon but also the heart of Cape Town.
Join us in celebrating the achievements of individuals like Sheldon and Melvyn, who inspire us all to pursue our dreams, embrace challenges, and push our limits. Together, let us showcase Cape Town and the African continent’s vibrant cultures and iconic marathon champions to the world!
Sheldon’s story resonates with many as it underscores the importance of celebrating incremental progress. “Remember, every small victory brings you closer to your dreams!” he encourages fellow runners and aspiring athletes. With his sights set on future challenges, Sheldon looks forward to participating in the #LegendsTownshipMarathon and the prestigious #Comrades in 2025.

Melvyn Lubega: An Unforgettable Adventure
Equally inspiring is the story of Melvyn Lubega, who also participated in the Cape Town Marathon, albeit in a more spontaneous manner. Melvyn, an actuary by training and a seasoned technology entrepreneur, was in Cape Town for the annual Southern African Venture Capital & Private Equity Association (SAVCA) conference when he received an unexpected invitation from his good friend Carl.
With little preparation and no trail running gear, Melvyn accepted the challenge of running the Cape Town Trail Marathon. “I hadn’t trained and I had no appropriate shoes,” he admitted. However, the situation turned fortuitous when Carl lent him a spare kit adorned with the South African flag. The camaraderie of the race was palpable, as fellow runners and spectators cheered him on with phrases like, “Come on, you’re carrying the nation!”
With 22km and an elevation gain of 830m behind him, Melvyn described the experience as unforgettable. “Running in one of the most beautiful cities in the world along Signal Hill and Lion’s Head was incredible,” he remarked, thanking the community that supported him throughout the journey.
