World Tequila Day is often marked by raised glasses and curated playlists but this year the celebration in South Africa took a more refined turn honouring heritage craftsmanship and the enduring cultural resonance of tequila hecho con amor. At the centre of the celebration stood Don Julio Tequila hosting an experiential showcase that brought the story of the brand to life with elegance and intent.
The event hosted by Sonic State Experiential blended education with entertainment a nod to Don Julio’s founding values of excellence tradition and devotion to process. Guests were immersed in the tequila making journey through fashion curated tasting experiences and a cultural homage to Jalisco’s highlands where it all began in 1942.
A Love Letter to Mexico
Few spirits carry the emotional weight that tequila does. For Don Julio González the man behind the name tequila was never a product. It was a calling.
Born in the Jaliscan Highlands Don Julio established La Primavera distillery at 6500 feet above sea level amid rich volcanic soil and exacting weather conditions. With a loan and a vision he walked the agave fields daily not as a businessman but as a guardian of craft. Each plant was treated with reverence. Each harvest timed to perfection.
This devotion gave rise to a tequila not just known for its smooth complexity but for its soul.
The Jimador Legacy
To this day Don Julio’s Jimadors continue to harvest blue agave plant by plant handpicking only those at peak maturity. It’s a time intensive and physically demanding method but one that yields depth and balance in every bottle.
The Blue Weber agave native to Mexico is the cornerstone of Don Julio’s profile matured over 5 to 7 years before the heart or piña is harvested and transformed. One piña under precise fermentation and distillation can yield up to five litres of 100 percent agave tequila at 55 percent ABV.

South Africa’s Stylish Salute
The World Tequila Day celebration in Johannesburg was more than a tribute to premium tequila. It was a carefully curated convergence of culture, fashion, and elevated lifestyle. Among the standout guests was television personality and fashion influencer K Naomi, who arrived in a coordinated shimmering-textured ensemble that balanced elegance with modern simplicity. Her look subtly echoed the earthy tones of Jalisco’s agave landscape, grounding the occasion in visual symbolism.
Also in attendance was Slade, the international DJ and music curator, who delivered both sonic precision and sartorial impact in an all-black leather look. Known for his genre-crossing sets and contemporary edge, Slade helped define the atmosphere of the night with both sound and style.
Joining them was Lizeka Makala, a biomedical and BPharm graduate whose presence bridges academic achievement and digital influence. Her contribution to the event’s style narrative underscored the multidimensional nature of today’s tastemakers.
The venue merged artisan cocktails with immersive storytelling, offering a detailed look into the Don Julio legacy. Through installations, guided tastings, and visual nods to the Jaliscan Highlands, guests experienced a rich narrative of tradition and craftsmanship.
Across social media, content creators, musicians, and tastemakers captured and shared the event’s energy. It wasn’t just a celebration — it was an editorial moment where legacy, lifestyle, and cultural identity were poured into every glass.
