Giorgio Armani , the Italian fashion designer whose name became synonymous with elegance and modern tailoring, has died at the age of 91. Over decades, Armani reshaped the landscape of both men’s and women’s fashion, creating a global brand that extended far beyond clothing into fragrance, beauty, sports, music, and luxury hospitality, generating over £2 billion in annual revenue.
Armani’s influence was felt on the red carpet, in cinema, and in everyday style. He was a pioneer of suit tailoring for women and men alike, introducing refined silhouettes and immaculate construction that redefined professional and formal attire. He also set a precedent in model welfare, being the first major designer to ban underweight models from his runway after the death of Ana Carolina Reston in 2006.
Hollywood stars remembered Armani not only for his designs but for his personal warmth. Russell Crowe called him “a man who made a mark acknowledged around the globe,” while Julia Roberts described him as “a true friend. A legend.” Donatella Versace added, “The world lost a giant today, he made history and will be remembered forever.” British designer Paul Smith highlighted Armani’s enduring influence, praising his independence and consistency over decades.

Milan-based Armani remained actively involved in his brand until the end, directing collections and shaping new projects, including remotely presenting his July 2025 Paris couture show. Even in his final years, he used fashion as a medium for cultural and political commentary, with his March 2025 show reflecting a vision of global harmony.
Away from the atelier, Armani was passionate about sports, supporting Serie A team Inter Milan and owning Olimpia Milano basketball club, while his brand partnered with Scuderia Ferrari in Formula 1. His achievements were formally recognized with the French Legion of Honour and the Italian Order of Merit for Labour.
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni summed up his impact: “With his elegance, sobriety, and creativity, he brought lustre to Italian fashion and inspired the entire world. An icon, a tireless worker, a symbol of the best of Italy. Thank you for everything.”
From a medical student in the 1960s to a global fashion titan, Giorgio Armani’s life was a testament to vision, craftsmanship, and an unwavering commitment to style. His legacy—woven into garments, runways, and hearts worldwide—will continue to influence generations.
