NEV Summit 2025 opened in Gauteng with a clear message: South Africa’s transition to new energy vehicles (NEVs) is about more than clean technology. It’s about building industries, creating jobs and empowering the next generation.
Speaking at the summit, Gauteng MEC for Finance and Economic Development Lebogang Maile stressed that the province must go beyond technology and focus on real economic and social impact. “NEVs aren’t just about clean tech; they’re a driver of jobs, skills, and youth empowerment,” he said during his keynote address.
The summit, hosted by Gauteng Growth and Development Agency in partnership with Automotive Industry Development Centre and other stakeholders, brought together industry leaders, policymakers and investors. The discussions focused on building a competitive NEV manufacturing sector, supporting local innovation, and strengthening public–private partnerships.
Maile highlighted that the province is positioning itself as a green mobility hub, with special economic zones such as Tshwane Automotive Special Economic Zone playing a central role in the localisation of components and technology. “If we get this right, the NEV sector can become one of the country’s biggest job creators,” he said.
AIDC CEO Andile Africa and TASEZ CEO Bheka Zulu echoed the importance of collaboration to drive the sector forward. Both noted that building local skills, attracting investment and scaling production capacity are essential steps to ensure that South Africa is not left behind in the global energy transition.
The event also spotlighted research and development programmes aimed at building a local supply chain for EV batteries, charging infrastructure and related technologies. Stakeholders agreed that sustainable growth will depend on coordinated policy, investment incentives and skills development initiatives.

The summit forms part of Gauteng’s broader economic strategy to position itself as a leader in green industries and advanced manufacturing. With the right partnerships, the province aims to be at the forefront of Africa’s electric mobility revolution.
