Women Economic Assembly Drives Women’s Empowerment with Data & Accountability

“What gets measured, gets managed.” This compelling adage set the tone for an inspiring discussion at the Women Economic Assembly (Wecona) this past Friday, where the need for tangible, data-driven action in women’s empowerment took center stage.

One of the most significant announcements of the day was the launch of the Women Empowerment Index Dashboard, a groundbreaking initiative developed in partnership with Deloitte. This tool is set to revolutionize how we track and evaluate the inclusion of women across various industry levels. By quantifying participation and representation, Wecona aims to ensure that industries not only set diversity targets but actively work toward meeting them. It is a clarion call for transparency and accountability—because when progress is measurable, inaction is indefensible.

Wecona’s track record in holding industries to account speaks for itself. A particularly striking example dates back to 2021, when the assembly challenged the automotive industry to increase female participation. Fast forward a few years, and the sector has responded decisively—investing millions into transformation efforts. This success story is a testament to the power of strategic intervention and unrelenting advocacy.

The assembly also welcomed insights from Sindisiwe Chikunga, Minister of Women, Youth, and Persons with Disabilities, who emphasized the importance of leveraging public procurement as a tool for fostering inclusivity. As government spending holds immense potential to drive structural change, ensuring that women-led enterprises benefit from procurement opportunities is paramount. It was a rallying cry to rethink economic frameworks and place gender inclusivity at the core of policy implementation.

Among the notable attendees was Savannah Cozzi, a passionate advocate for women’s empowerment, education, and entrepreneurship. As the Executive Director of the Education Outreach Foundation and Co-Founder of Socially Gathering, Cozzi’s presence underscored the significance of mentorship and leadership in fostering change. She attended the event alongside her mentor, Futhi Mtoba, Co-Chair of Wecona, whose dedication to advancing women in business and governance continues to inspire a new generation of changemakers.

The momentum is building. The tools are in place. Now, it’s time to ensure that transformation is not just a conversation but a sustained movement. As Wecona continues to shape industries, challenge norms, and demand accountability, one thing remains clear—when women rise, industries thrive.
