The streets of Johannesburg pulsed with energy this morning as Joburg MMC for Community Development, Cllr Tebogo Nkokou joined hundreds of women at the Totalsports Women’s Race, marking National Women’s Month with a celebration of fitness, solidarity, and female empowerment.
The event, an annual fixture on the city’s sporting calendar, is part of the City of Johannesburg’s ongoing mandate to uplift women through community engagement, health, and sport. From the first blast of the starting gun to the last stride across the finish line, participants embraced the day as more than a race — it was a shared statement of resilience and unity.
Cape Town Sets the Stage
Earlier in August, Cape Town’s Totalsports Women’s Race drew 15,000 women to the streets in support of PinkDrive, a nonprofit committed to breast cancer awareness and free services for the medically uninsured. Against overcast skies, a sea of pink filled the Mother City, blending spectacle with purpose. Karabo More, a local standout, emerged as the first South African finisher, embodying the drive and determination the event seeks to inspire.
“The energy today made this day truly special,” said Michael Meyer, Managing Director of Stillwater Sports, the event organiser. “We’re proud to celebrate and empower women through sport and community. Johannesburg is ready to take this momentum to the next level.”

Running for More Than a Medal
Participants in Johannesburg — whether racing for personal bests, soaking in the scenic routes, or simply enjoying camaraderie — reinforced the day’s message: empowerment is collective. From elite athletes to first-time runners, the focus was unity and mutual encouragement.
Event marketing head Nikki Crous praised the vibrant atmosphere: “From start to finish, the spirit of the city was palpable. It’s an incredible moment to honour the strength, resilience, and determination of women everywhere.”
Community Impact Beyond the Finish Line
PinkDrive’s presence at each race ensures that charity and education remain central. Free clinical breast examinations and self-check education were offered, highlighting the crucial link between health awareness and community participation. For women seeking guidance or access to services, PinkDrive’s resources remain available year-round.
The Totalsports Women’s Race continues to prove that sporting events can be more than competition — they are platforms for empowerment, connection, and advocacy. As Johannesburg celebrated today, the city’s streets ran not just with feet but with purpose.
