Summer Walker Issues Apology After Cut-Short Pretoria Performance Amid Festival Controversy

Pretoria, South Africa — American R&B sensation Summer Walker has apologised to her South African fans after her headlining performance at the In The City festival in Pretoria was unexpectedly cut short on Sunday, October 5.

The “A Heart of a Woman” singer, who arrived in South Africa to an enthusiastic welcome at O.R. Tambo International Airport earlier this week, expressed regret over the situation in statements posted to her social media platforms.

On X, Walker wrote: “South Africa, I love you guys so much. You guys were the best show. I wanted to do the full hour, but the venue and SA police didn’t allow me to; it was not my fault. I love you guys, I’ll be back soon.”

On Instagram, she added pointed criticism towards the event organiser: “@steynent, as the promoter of the event refused to pay the JOC, so it messed up the whole show even though we were early. Love you guys until next time.”

Disappointment Among Fans

Walker’s set, originally scheduled for approximately an hour, lasted barely 30 minutes, prompting widespread frustration among attendees. Social media reactions reflected a mixture of support for the artist and disappointment towards organisers. One fan wrote: “These promoters didn’t do justice; they did her wrong @summerwalker. We stand with you.” Others called for a standalone Summer Walker concert so she could deliver her full repertoire without festival constraints.

The festival, hosted at SunBet Arena, is part of the three-day Rocking the Daisies experience, held at Cloof Wine Estate in Cape Town from October 3 to 5. Walker’s appearance came amid growing excitement in Gauteng following her announcement as a headline act.

Arrival and Cultural Connection

Walker’s arrival in South Africa was marked by vibrant scenes. Videos shared on TikTok and Instagram captured the singer engaging with fans at O.R. Tambo Airport and later enjoying Jozi’s nightlife in Maboneng. She shared clips of herself dancing to Amapiano beats, joking about extending her stay: “Somebody send for my kids. Get their passports. South Africa, ya’ll won.”

Netizens expressed excitement, with some commenting that Walker resembles South African media personality Sithelo Shozi, further cementing her instant connection with local fans.

Past Controversy Ahead of Performance

Walker’s visit to Mzansi was preceded by controversy earlier this year. In June, she faced backlash for mocking reality TV star Wandi Ndlovu’s Brazilian Butt Lift (BBL) in an Instagram post, which sparked debate on body image and social media accountability. Ndlovu later revealed having spoken to Walker, who defended the post as a joke. The incident underscored the complexities of public perception in an era of viral content.

Despite the performance disruption, Walker reassured her audience of her commitment to return. For fans, the hope remains that a rescheduled show will allow the artist to deliver the full experience they came to see. Her South African visit, blending celebration, controversy, and candid interaction, reflects her growing global influence and the deep connection between international artists and Mzansi’s vibrant music scene.
