Inside the Sport Business Forum 2025: South Africa’s Growing Sports Market

The 2025 Sport Business Forum (SBF) concluded in Johannesburg on 17 October, affirming South Africa’s growing influence in the global sports economy. Hosted at the Wanderers Stadium, the two-day summit gathered senior policymakers, corporate executives, and sports innovators under the theme “Championing Growth and Sustainability in Sports and Business.”

The forum, widely regarded as Africa’s leading sports business platform, explored the economics driving modern sport — from sponsorship models and athlete development to sustainability frameworks and gender inclusion in leadership. The event’s hybrid format drew a diverse international audience, positioning South Africa as the gateway to Africa’s R93-billion sports market, according to PwC’s Sports Industry Outlook.

Among the keynote discussions was a high-level exchange between Gauteng MEC for Sport, Motaome Chilwane, and sports economist Sgwili Gumede, who addressed the intersection of policy, investment, and community development in sports infrastructure. Their conversation underscored the province’s commitment to leveraging sport as a driver for youth employment, entrepreneurship, and tourism.

A standout session on “Women in Sports Leadership” featured Nontokozo Madonsela, Jessica Motaung, Lydia Monyepao-Yele, and Dawn Lubisi — each representing a pivotal voice in advancing female participation in executive sport governance. The panel emphasized strategic collaboration and data-backed decision-making to ensure gender equity within federations and corporate sponsorship structures.

The forum also highlighted the emergence of sport technology startups, analytics platforms, and sustainability-driven event models as central to the industry’s evolution. Delegates examined global best practices in athlete management, the rise of esports, and Africa’s potential to become a hub for green sports infrastructure investment.

Reflecting on the event’s impact, the Sport Business Forum team thanked delegates, speakers, and sponsors for shaping a more inclusive and commercially robust sports ecosystem. Organisers confirmed that the next edition of the forum will take place on 15–16 October 2026, promising an expanded agenda and greater continental participation.

The success of #SBF25 signals a strategic shift: South Africa is no longer merely participating in the business of sport — it is defining it.
