Maxhosa Africa Marks a Landmark Homecoming With New Lifestyle Store in East London

Maxhosa Africa expanded its national footprint with the launch of its first dedicated lifestyle store at Hemingways Mall in East London, a development that signals the brand’s deepening commitment to its cultural roots and its growing global stature. The opening, held on 15 November 2025, brings the brand’s full Maxhosa Lifestyle homeware range to a physical retail space for the first time in the Eastern Cape, offering shoppers access to products previously available primarily online.

The new store consolidates Maxhosa Africa’s expanding homeware catalogue—cushions, rugs, shawls, throws, and towel sets—featuring the label’s signature geometric motifs inspired by Xhosa beadwork traditions. The collection also includes select home and kitchen items produced in partnership with Woolworths, such as Wupperthal Rooibos tea tins, double-wall stainless-steel flasks, and ceramic-bottled extra virgin olive oil.

Founded in 2011 by designer and entrepreneur Laduma Ngxokolo, the brand has its origins in a BTech thesis project at Nelson Mandela University. Ngxokolo’s early work sought to reinterpret knitwear for amakrwala—Xhosa initiates transitioning into manhood—using textile technology to preserve cultural aesthetics in modern fashion. His trajectory shifted decisively after receiving the International Society of Dyers and Colourists Design Award in 2010, followed by the Marie Claire Prix de Excellence Best Emerging Designer Award (2011) and the Premium International Best Emerging Designer Award (2014). In 2016, a Maxhosa shawl received the Design Indaba “Most Beautiful Object in South Africa” distinction.

The brand’s global visibility accelerated after Ngxokolo completed a Master’s in Material Futures at Central Saint Martins, positioning Maxhosa on runways in London, Paris, Milan, and New York. A Maxhosa cable-knit sweater later featured in the Museum of Modern Art’s exhibition “Is Fashion Modern?” in 2018, marking a rare institutional recognition for contemporary African knitwear. Subsequent accolades include the African Luxury Heritage Brand of the Year (2021), the Outstanding Contribution to Fashion Award (SA Fashion Awards, 2025), and the Global Icon Award at the Metro FM Music Awards (2025).

International expansion became a key strategic milestone when the brand inaugurated its first global flagship in Manhattan in 2024. While often misreported as a UK flagship, the opening marked Maxhosa Africa’s formal entry into the United States retail market, complementing its South African stores in Johannesburg, the Mall of Africa, and Newtown Junction.

The East London launch functions as both a commercial step and a symbolic return to the Ngxokolo family’s maternal home province. Positioned in one of the region’s busiest retail corridors, the store reflects growing domestic demand for culturally grounded African luxury and signals Maxhosa’s intention to strengthen its presence in South Africa’s regional markets.

With rising global interest in African design and increasing competition in the premium lifestyle segment, the new store consolidates Maxhosa Africa’s evolution from a knitwear label into a fully fledged heritage-driven lifestyle brand. Further expansion is expected as the company continues to scale its homeware line and deepen partnerships across fashion, interiors, and retail.
