A live art activation by Maybelline South Africa transformed Nelson Mandela Square into a creative runway of expression this past week, as beauty met brushstroke in a high-impact collaboration with visual artist Ricollin Moodley and amapiano star Kamo Mphela. The event marked the official unveiling of Ricollin’s large-scale lipstick-and-foundation portrait of Mphela, created using only Maybelline Superstay Matte Ink products.
Over five days, Moodley executed the live painting in full public view, drawing shoppers, fans, and influencers to witness the transformation. The final portrait, a detailed and vibrant representation of Kamo Mphela, stood as both a celebration of feminine strength and a showcase of cosmetic versatility. Mphela was present at the reveal, joining fans and brand partners in commemorating the milestone.
The activation was part of Maybelline’s broader #LipstickMonth campaign, bringing energy, visibility, and consumer engagement to its Superstay Matte Ink range. Product displays, giveaways, and digital interactions underscored the brand’s youth-oriented positioning and commitment to artistic collaboration.
“The dedication? Immaculate. The art? Beyond,” read a statement from the campaign team, highlighting Ricollin’s process and precision.
A self-taught artist from KwaZulu-Natal, Ricollin has become a rising force in South Africa’s creative economy. Known for using unconventional materials — particularly makeup — his distinctive work has landed him features in both GQ South Africa and The Independent, while also generating a loyal online following.
