A President with Purpose: Namibia’s Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah

She leads with data, vision, and unapologetic intent. Her presidency marks not just a political shift, but a cultural one — placing African women at the heart of governance and reform. With sweeping changes to immigration policy and a governance style rooted in clarity and courage, President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah is commanding global attention not just for what she represents, but for what she’s accomplishing.

From recalibrating visa frameworks to accelerating regional integration, her administration is writing a new chapter in the story of the continent — one where legal reform meets human dignity, and leadership reflects the lived realities of its citizens.

A Cabinet That Mirrors the Nation

Upon her inauguration on March 21, 2025, President Nandi-Ndaitwah unveiled a streamlined cabinet of 14 ministers, nine of whom are women. This historic gender balance places Namibia at the forefront of inclusive governance in Africa. Notably, Lucia Witbooi, a seasoned political leader, was appointed as the nation’s first female Vice President, marking a significant milestone in the country’s political landscape.

Key appointments include:

  • Ericah Shafudah, Minister of Finance, bringing over two decades of experience from the finance ministry and the World Food Programme.
  • Selma Ashipala-Musavyi, Minister of International Relations and Trade, a seasoned diplomat with a robust background in public administration.
  • Lucia Iipumbu, Minister of Home Affairs, Immigration, Safety, and Security, tasked with overseeing the nation’s internal affairs and immigration policies.

This cabinet not only reflects gender inclusivity but also a commitment to expertise and experience, setting a new standard for leadership in the region.

Immigration Policy: A Reciprocal Approach

In a move signaling a shift towards equitable international relations, President Nandi-Ndaitwah’s administration introduced a reciprocal visa policy. As of April 1, 2025, citizens from countries like the United States and parts of the European Union are required to obtain a visa upon arrival in Namibia, aligning with the entry requirements Namibian citizens face abroad. This policy underscores the nation’s stance on mutual respect and fairness in global mobility.

Economic Diversification and Youth Employment

Addressing the pressing issue of youth unemployment, which stood at 38.03% in 2023, President Nandi-Ndaitwah has pledged to create at least 500,000 jobs over the next five years. This ambitious goal involves a significant investment of N$85 billion and focuses on diversifying the economy beyond its traditional reliance on the diamond sector.

Finance Minister Ericah Shafudah emphasized the importance of this diversification, noting that the continued weaknesses in the diamond sector necessitate a broader economic base to mitigate external shocks and ensure sustainable growth.

A Vision for Inclusive Leadership

President Nandi-Ndaitwah’s leadership is characterized by a commitment to transparency, efficiency, and inclusivity. She has implemented performance monitoring dashboards for her ministers, with evaluations set to begin three months into their terms. This approach ensures accountability and aligns governmental actions with the aspirations of the Namibian people.

Her administration’s focus on gender equality, economic diversification, and equitable international relations positions Namibia as a model for progressive governance in Africa.

As Namibia embarks on this new era, President Nandi-Ndaitwah’s policies and leadership style are not only transforming the nation’s political landscape but also setting a precedent for inclusive and effective governance across the continent.
