The 2025 edition of the Basha Uhuru Freedom Festival has returned to Constitution Hill with renewed focus and expanded programming, marking a pivotal celebration of Youth Month in Gauteng. This year’s festival—held under the theme “Celebrating the Legacy of Creative Expression”—places youth-led innovation, entrepreneurship, and cultural development at the centre of national discourse.

Hosted by Constitution Hill in partnership with a new cohort of programme collaborators, the Basha Uhuru Creative Conference forms the intellectual and developmental core of the festival. It is designed as a space for learning, collaboration, and industry advancement, bringing together practitioners across the visual arts, design, digital content, music, fashion, and publishing sectors.
According to the Gauteng Provincial Government, the festival serves as “an opportunity to learn and be inspired, share skills and nurture talent, network, collaborate, create and monetise, whilst driving important conversations affecting the creative sector.”
With a combination of panels, masterclasses, exhibitions, and performances, the event invites emerging and established voices to engage on the socioeconomic role of creative expression. It also functions as a platform for cross-sector networking, supporting pathways into commercial viability for young creatives seeking to professionalise their work.
Now recognised as one of Johannesburg’s most anticipated cultural gatherings, #BashaUhuru continues to evolve from a heritage-rooted commemoration into a forward-facing development space. The 2025 programming reinforces the link between creative industries and youth economic inclusion—particularly in the context of South Africa’s rising unemployment and the need for new models of job creation.
The festival’s emphasis on “legacy” aligns with Constitution Hill’s identity as a living museum of South Africa’s constitutional democracy, transforming memory into motion and history into active participation in present-day development.

Basha Uhuru 2025 is supported by the Gauteng Provincial Government through the #VisitGauteng tourism campaign and forms part of a broader provincial strategy to position Gauteng as a cultural capital with measurable impact on youth employment, social innovation, and creative sector monetisation.
