HR Indaba 2025: Where Data Meets Humanity in the Future of Work

The annual HR Indaba 2025 brought together South Africa’s most influential voices in human resources, leadership, and business transformation — converging at the Sandton Convention Centre for two days of dialogue on the evolving architecture of people and performance.

More than a professional gathering, this year’s event became a movement — one defined by courage, empathy, and a renewed call for data-driven, people-centred leadership. The conversations that emerged were as varied as they were urgent: from the strategic repositioning of HR as a profit driver to the moral weight of leadership in shaping workplace culture.

Reframing HR as a Profit Centre

In a standout session titled Transform HR from a Cost Centre to a Profit DriverHeine Bellingan (Co-Founder & Co-CEO, JOBJACK) and Unathi Ncunyana (Human Resources Director, KFC Africa) challenged conventional views of HR as a support function. Their discussion illustrated how digital recruitment strategies — particularly for entry-level positions — can directly influence business profitability by aligning workforce planning with organisational growth metrics.

Companies such as KFC AfricaEvalexADP South Africa, and Mercer underscored how technology, analytics, and agile assessment models are reshaping the employee lifecycle. Step Ahead Staffing, one of the attending organisations, noted that the insights “reinforced the importance of adaptability, continuous learning, and employee growth in today’s dynamic business environment.”

Leadership with Care and Conviction

Among the most resonant voices on stage was Boniwe Dunster, Executive: Human Resources at Lanseria International Airport, who delivered an incisive reflection on the role of empathy in leadership.

“You need to bring an element of care. There’s nothing wrong with discipline — but it’s in the mannerisms, and in how the information is relayed.”

Her message — that discipline without compassion creates distance — captured the tone of the Indaba. Speaking alongside Reabetswe Motshegare (HR Director, Scatec Sub-Saharan Africa) and Khabonina Ramoupi (Group People Officer, AECI Limited), Dunster led a panel that delved into toxic cultures, moral leadership, and the courage required to confront structural dysfunction within organisations.

Their dialogue, hosted by The Speakers Firm, was less a panel than a manifesto — a call to HR professionals to lead with both care and candour. The firm described the discussion as “a movement — a call to every HR professional to lead with care, confront with courage, and create workplaces where people truly thrive.”

Data, Humanity, and the Future of Work

A consistent theme throughout the Indaba was the integration of data into decision-making. Delegates emphasised that data is not a nice-to-have; it’s the backbone of every smart HR decision. Yet, amid the emphasis on analytics, speakers repeatedly returned to the principle that technology must serve human connection — not replace it.

Dr. Steven Molakeng — therapist, trauma counsellor, musician, and pastor — captured this balance. Representing The Speakers Firm, he reminded delegates that influence “extends far beyond the stage — it lives in every conversation, every connection, and every act of service.” His approach to leadership fused psychological insight with social empathy, illustrating the human side of transformation.

The Voice That Leads the Conversation

Among the event’s most commanding presences was Michelle Craig, a sought-after speaker and facilitator known for her ability to transform summits into spaces of inclusion and decision-making. Her sessions reflected the Indaba’s guiding spirit — moving conversations “from dialogue to decision,” as her firm, Empowaworx, aptly described it.

Craig’s moderation, marked by precision and empathy, underscored a central truth: in a world where leadership often becomes performative, authenticity remains the highest currency.

An Industry in Transition

If the HR Indaba 2025 proved anything, it is that human resources is no longer confined to the margins of corporate strategy. It stands at its centre — a critical force driving profit, purpose, and people transformation.

As Step Ahead Staffing observed, the event “solidified our commitment to driving inclusion, growth, and innovation in the HR landscape.”

From data science to empathy, from profit strategy to people-first leadership, HR Indaba 2025 revealed that the future of work in South Africa will be defined not only by technological sophistication, but by human intelligence — care, courage, and connection.
