Math Restaurant Elevates Wine and Dining with Exclusive Math Wine Club Experience

Johannesburg’s culinary scene continues to evolve, and at the heart of it lies Math Restaurant, the brainchild of Puleng Mathabathe. Nestled in the stylish Waterfall Corner precinct, the restaurant is redefining communal dining with its latest initiative: the Math Wine Club.

Launched in 2024, Math Restaurant pays homage to Mathabathe’s family legacy of entrepreneurship, drawing inspiration from his parents’ iconic hardware store in Lebowakgomo. The name “Math” reflects the first four letters of the family surname, while the tagline, “When We Gather”, encapsulates the venue’s philosophy: bringing people together to share stories, laughter, and exquisite food.

The Math Wine Club offers an intimate monthly experience where wine enthusiasts, winemakers, and culinary creatives converge. Guests enjoy a carefully curated evening of fine wines paired with thoughtfully prepared dishes by Chef Ean. Each event is hosted by wine specialist Amos Sobashe in partnership with LAB Wines & Spirits, creating an immersive tasting experience that elevates Johannesburg’s wine culture.

The upcoming event on Thursday, 23 October, promises a celebration of Taaibosch Wines and Le Chant Wines, paired with an exclusive four-course menu designed to highlight the wines’ unique profiles. Guests are welcomed from 18:00, with the tasting commencing at 18:30, offering the perfect balance of sophistication and conviviality.

Math Restaurant’s menu is a fusion of contemporary continental and South African cuisine, ranging from comforting classics to inventive dishes such as prawn toast and Tuscan chicken pasta. The interior reflects a blend of modern elegance and classic charm, featuring a circular communal table for group gatherings, cozy booth seating, and a striking mural that embodies the restaurant’s ethos.

Looking ahead, the Math Wine Club continues to host exclusive events throughout the remainder of the year:

  • 20 November 2025
  • 10 December 2025
  • 18 December 2025

For the cosmopolitan wine lover, Math Restaurant offers more than a meal—it’s a curated gathering of taste, culture, and community, where the art of wine and cuisine meet in an intimate, luxurious setting.
