Making Waves: Zandile Ndhlovu and ISUZU Partner to Inspire a New Generation of Ocean Guardians

At the heart of this collaboration is Zandi’s Song, a picture book that follows the story of a young girl who embarks on an underwater adventure. Along her journey, Zandi experiences the awe-inspiring beauty of the ocean and the stark reality of plastic pollution. The story empowers young readers to realize that they can be the change the world needs, fostering a sustainability mindset from an early age. This isn’t just a book—it’s an invitation for children, especially those from marginalized communities, to see themselves in ocean spaces that have historically felt inaccessible to them.

Zandile Ndhlovu’s Black Mermaid Foundation has long advocated for diverse representation in ocean arenas—whether recreationally, professionally, or in sport. Her work extends beyond the boundaries of free-diving; it’s about bringing ocean conservation and coastal justice to the forefront, and it’s about amplifying voices that have often been left out of the conversation.

“This book creates an invitation to these beautiful waters, where little ones can see themselves too.” – Zandile Ndhlovu

Changing the Narrative: Why Zandi’s Song Matters

In many Black communities, narratives about water and ocean spaces have often carried warnings to “stay away.” Zandile Ndhlovu is determined to rewrite these narratives, inviting children to explore the ocean and to see themselves as part of its story. Through Zandi’s Song, she is creating an opportunity for children—particularly from ocean-facing communities—to engage with water in a new way.

By fostering this connection at a young age, Zandile’s work through the Black Mermaid Foundation is cultivating future leaders in ocean conservation, a field that has long lacked diversity. And through her storytelling, she is highlighting the importance of ocean conservation and how young people can play a pivotal role in protecting our waters.

Education Meets Action: Pick n Pay School Clubs & Giving Them Wings Foundation

The impact of this initiative extends beyond the pages of Zandi’s Song. Through partnerships with the Pick n Pay School Clubs and the Giving Them Wings Foundation, children are encouraged to take action in their schools and communities. Pick n Pay’s People and Planet Initiative is mobilizing schools to engage in recycling efforts, while the Giving Them Wings Foundation is working closely with schools to empower students to become environmental stewards.

This hands-on approach means that children aren’t just reading about change—they’re actively participating in it. Through recycling drives and environmental clean-ups, the students are learning the importance of caring for their surroundings, reinforcing the message of Zandi’s Song in their everyday lives.

A Collaboration That Inspires

The partnership between Zandile Ndhlovu and ISUZU Motors South Africa is a powerful example of how storytelling, education, and corporate responsibility can come together to create meaningful change. By combining the magic of a children’s book with tangible action in local communities, this initiative is setting the stage for a future where young people are both literate and environmentally conscious.

In the words of Zandile herself, this partnership is one that goes “beyond belief”—an opportunity not just for children to see themselves reflected in ocean spaces but for entire communities to rally around the cause of environmental stewardship.

“Over 1200 books donated to three primary schools, directly impacting 1206 learners (grade 1-4). This was an interactive opportunity for these kids to learn about pollution on land and on sea and the negative impact that has on our environment.

Further to this, a recycling programme has been in these schools in partnership with Giving them wings foundation to learn to reduce, reuse or recycle waste to combat pollution. Pick ‘n Pay school club donated educational posters, worksheets, workbooks and pencil bag made from recycled PET bottles.”

Zandi’s Song is more than just a children’s book—it’s a call to action. It teaches the next generation that they can be part of the solution to one of the world’s biggest environmental problems, while also breaking down barriers for those who have historically been left out of the conversation. Through the collaboration with ISUZU, Zandile Ndhlovu’s vision is reaching more children and creating a ripple effect that could transform the future of ocean conservation.

And with partners like Pick n Pay and Giving Them Wings, the message is clear: Together, we can build a sustainable future, one that starts with educating and inspiring our youngest minds.
