A Century of Innovation and Progress: Celebrating 100 Years of BP in South Africa

In 1924, a pivotal chapter in South Africa’s industrial history began as the British Petroleum Company (BP) planted its roots in the country. Initially focused on importing oil and fuel products, BP answered the call of a burgeoning industrial economy, setting the foundation for a century of growth, transformation, and leadership in the energy sector.

Today, BP Southern Africa (bpSA) stands as a household name, with a legacy spanning fuel refining, innovative marketing, and a network of over 500 branded service stations. As it marks its centenary, bpSA is not just looking back but firmly ahead, with a vision of sustainable energy solutions that align with global net-zero ambitions.

Ofentse Geraldine Bosii, currently a Senior Marine Operator at BP Southern and East Africa, expressed her pride in working for BP, highlighting the company’s commitment to providing integrated energy solutions to its customers. She celebrated BP Southern Africa’s centennial milestone, marking 100 years of operation in the country, and acknowledged the company’s leadership in service and product excellence.

A Legacy of Firsts

Throughout its 100-year journey, bpSA has led with bold and transformative initiatives. It was the first local oil company to comply with lead abatement regulations, demonstrating a proactive approach to environmental stewardship. The groundbreaking Masana Petroleum Solutions joint venture showcased BP’s commitment to black economic empowerment, making strides in fostering an inclusive economy. Notably, bpSA was the first international oil company in South Africa to appoint a female CEO, setting benchmarks for leadership diversity.

A Strategy for the Future

As bpSA charts its course for the next century, it remains steadfast in adapting to an evolving energy landscape. CEO Taelo Mojapelo emphasizes the company’s dedication to innovation and inclusivity. “From our forecourt to our partners in retailing, storage, and distribution, we are committed to remaining a forward-looking steward of South Africa’s energy networks,” she notes.

The company’s strategic roadmap reflects this ethos, focusing on:

  1. Expanding Service Stations: Enhancing its portfolio while increasing ownership by black entrepreneurs and franchisees.
  2. Redefining Convenience Retailing: Upgrading its forecourt offerings through modern convenience brands like Wild Bean Café and Pick n Pay Express.
  3. Optimizing Supply Chains: Establishing a robust, integrated supply chain to drive sustained growth.

Pioneering a Sustainable Future

In alignment with BP’s global vision of transitioning from an oil company to an integrated energy solutions provider, bpSA is prioritizing low-carbon energy innovations. Renewable sources like wind and solar are set to play a critical role in its strategy, ensuring bpSA remains relevant in a world where energy demands and environmental responsibilities are intertwined.

As countries and companies work to lower carbon emissions, bpSA has positioned itself as a key player in South Africa’s journey toward a sustainable energy future.

A Commitment to Communities

The centenary celebrations are more than a corporate milestone—they are an opportunity to give back. BP has announced plans to settle outstanding university fees for select students, reinforcing its role as a catalyst for social and economic transformation. Additionally, customers can look forward to tokens of appreciation at bp filling stations, a nod to their loyalty over the decades.

An Iconic Symbol

To mark its 100-year milestone, bpSA has introduced a special identifier, featuring the iconic “lazy eight” infinity symbol—a visual representation of its enduring commitment to South Africa.

Looking Ahead

As bpSA celebrates a century of impact, its sights are firmly set on the next 100 years. Guided by principles of resilience, innovation, and inclusivity, the company is poised to continue shaping South Africa’s energy landscape for generations to come.

For bpSA, the story is far from over. It is a tale of reimagining energy, transforming industries, and uplifting communities—proof that, even after a century, the best is yet to come.
