YouthConnekt Hub: Empowering Africa’s Youth to Lead in HealthTech Innovation

In a monumental achievement for African youth and innovation, 40 trailblazing innovators from 21 countries have been selected for the first cohort of the YouthConnekt Hub in Rwanda. Out of 957 applications, these innovators were chosen to lead the charge in developing transformative solutions in sectors like health, technology, and sustainable development. Among them is a proud Mosotho representative, shining a spotlight on the Basotho people and their growing influence on the global stage.

This initiative, a partnership between the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP)Timbuktoo Africa, and key implementation partners, marks a defining moment in the trajectory of Africa’s young leaders. It underscores a renewed commitment to providing the next generation with the tools, resources, and platforms necessary to innovate and address pressing challenges in health, technology, and beyond.

A Vision for HealthTech Innovation

The YouthConnekt Hub serves as more than just a support structure for young entrepreneurs—it is a launchpad for Africa’s burgeoning tech and health sectors. The newly established Timbuktoo HealthTech Hub in Kigali, Rwanda, stands at the intersection of youth empowerment and cutting-edge technological advancements. The Hub is designed to incubate and accelerate the work of innovators who are developing groundbreaking solutions to Africa’s most critical health challenges. From improving digital health access to pioneering AI-powered diagnostics, the innovators selected for the YouthConnekt Hub are poised to bring about real, lasting change.

A Voice of Inspiration from Leadership

In a poignant message to the 40 innovators at the launch of the HealthTech HubRwandan President Paul Kagameurged them to embrace the boundless opportunities before them. “The future is in your hands. Don’t let opportunities pass you by—unlock your potential and lead with pride in our values and diversity. This century is yours to shape!” His words echoed the ambitions of the Hub, which is designed not only to tackle Africa’s health issues but to position African talent and innovation at the forefront of global progress.

The visit of Ahunna Eziakonwa, the United Nations Assistant Secretary-General and UNDP Regional Director for Africa, further highlighted the importance of this initiative. Reflecting on the potential of the Timbuktoo HealthTech Hub, she stated, “This initiative puts African innovation at the forefront of global health advancements.” Her visit reinforced UNDP’s mission to empower youth across Africa, strengthen the continent’s role in global health, and solidify Rwanda’s commitment to fostering an environment of entrepreneurship and innovation.

Global Collaboration for Sustainable Development

The collaboration between the Ministry of ICT, the University of Rwanda, and UNDP was integral in making this dream a reality. Fatmata Sesay, a key partner in this endeavor, praised the hard work and collaboration that led to the creation of UR_Unipod—a space where young leaders can collaborate and solve complex challenges. She expressed her excitement about seeing this partnership come to fruition, knowing that it will empower young leaders to contribute to Africa’s sustainable development.
