Johannesburg City Library Reopens After 90 Years

Johannesburg — After months of careful restoration, the Johannesburg City Library has reopened, marking 90 years since its first doors opened in 1935. The reopening, celebrated on August 9, drew an energized crowd of city officials, community members, and avid readers, all eager to witness the return of one of Africa’s most iconic public knowledge hubs.

The ceremony was led by Executive Mayor Cllr Dada Morero, with MMC for Development Planning Cllr Eunice Mgcinaand Johannesburg Development Agency (JDA) CEO Themba Mathibe in attendance. Guests were treated to a live performance, filling the historic space with music and marking the beginning of a new era for the library.

“The Johannesburg City Library is more than just a building; it is a living space where stories, ideas, and learning converge,” said Mathibe. “Its reopening reflects our community’s commitment to knowledge, culture, and shared heritage.” Morero echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the role of learning in building #TheJoburgWeAllWant.

Restoration works over the past months included ensuring full fire compliance, modernising facilities, and upgrading essential infrastructure such as water tanks and pumps. The library now balances its historic architecture with contemporary functionality, ensuring safety, accessibility, and an inviting environment for all visitors.

Home to an extraordinary collection of up to two million books, rare maps, and newspapers dating back to the 1890s, the library serves more than 250,000 registered members. A newly unveiled children’s section adds a vibrant, interactive space where young readers can develop a lifelong love for learning.

Recognised under the Presidential Joburg Working Group’s G20 Workstream 7, the library continues to be a key cultural and educational anchor for Johannesburg. Beyond books, it hosts workshops, lectures, and community events, reinforcing its place as a cornerstone of civic pride and knowledge-sharing.

Community members unable to attend in person were invited to join the celebrations via a live broadcast on the City of Johannesburg’s YouTube channel, ensuring the library’s reopening reached audiences across the city.

The restored Johannesburg City Library stands as a testament to the power of community, vision, and heritage. It is a space where history and the future converge, inspiring generations of readers, learners, and creators alike.
